The current health care reform proposals in Congress represent one of the single greatest legislative threats to the family we have seen in many years. The current plan will be the largest expansion of abortion rights and abortion funding since Roe v. Wade, while also threatening the freedom of conscience of health care professionals who oppose abortion.

In addition, the terminally ill, the elderly, the infirm -- every family facing difficult medical decisions -- may soon realize that they no longer have the power to make decisions for their loved ones. This is because the government health care plan sets the stage to give government officials unprecedented influence over health care decisions that have always been the responsibility of the family.

Focus Action Petition to Protect Life and Families in Health Care
Focus on the Family Action has initiated a nationwide citizen petition to protect the preborn, defend medical professionals and keep families in charge of health care decisions. Our goal is to bring together citizens who will stand together and insist that any health care reform legislation respect the rights of the preborn, health care professionals and our families. The Petition States

As a concerned citizen, I am calling on Congress and the President to only pass a health care reform bill that respects the rights of the preborn, health care professionals and our families. Specifically:

I urge you to specifically exclude abortion coverage and funding and include conscience protections for health care workers in any health care reform plan.
I strongly oppose abortion coverage or taxpayer funding of abortion in any health care reform plan.
As a taxpayer, it is a violation of my freedom of conscience to be forced to fund or support government-mandated abortion coverage. In addition, health care professionals must not be forced to perform abortions.

Families should retain the right to make health care decisions, rather than have government officials involved in those decisions.
